Impact at Mustard

Impact at Mustard

We make beautiful things. It’s our responsibility to make them beautifully too, that includes considering their impact on the planet and the people who live in it.

Every Mustard piece has been crafted with these values in mind.

We design for a lifetime, not a season.

Designed to last

We use quality materials that don’t deteriorate with everyday use.

Lifetime customer care

We want your locker to last you for years to come, so our customer service team is always on hand to help.

Spare parts

We keep a library of spare parts so we can replace lost or damaged components and reduce waste.

Intentionally timeless

We don’t release seasonal drops that encourage overconsumption. Every addition to our range is intentional, designed to stand the test of time and outlast trends.

Versatile

Mustard pieces are designed to be multifunctional and work in all kinds of spaces and contexts, so they grow with you.

Consistent pricing

We don’t do sales often because in a world of fast furniture, we don’t want to contribute to waste.

Steel

We use steel which is infinitely recyclable. Our powder coating protects the steel from rust and corrosion and enhances longevity. Factory offcuts are recycled and repurposed to minimise waste.

Sustainably sourced timber

We source all our timber from responsibly managed forests, meaning we aren’t contributing to deforestation.

Non-toxic finishes

Our powder-coated products are made with VOC-free, non-toxic finishes and all our products meet chemical compliance standards.

Plastic reduction

  • We have redesigned our small parts components boxes to be completely plastic free without compromising on functionality.
  • We’ve transitioned from plastic polybags to kraft card wrapping for our Hangers and Baskets.
  • Our keys are now attached to locker doors with kraft ties instead of plastic cable ties.
  • Our smaller boxes are sealed with kraft paper tape instead of plastic. We are working towards using kraft tape for our bigger boxes, but we haven’t found a tape that can keep our heavy boxes secure just yet.
  • We developed a fully recyclable ‘honeycomb jacket’ to protect our locker panels during shipping, reducing damage and waste.
  • We are working towards the goal of having 100% responsibly sourced and recycled paper and cardboard.
  • We’ve transitioned almost* all of our soft padding from EPS (polystyrene) to EPE, a type of recyclable foam.

*We have chosen to keep one small piece of polystyrene for a particular part of the lockers as there was a significant benefit in terms of protecting the panel from damage. For now, that trade off makes the most sense to avoid waste.

Flat pack

Flat-packed products take up less space than pre-assembled furniture. This reduces our carbon footprint across the products’ journey.

Sea freight

Our products are sent from factory to warehouse by sea freight to minimise our carbon emissions. Air freight is only used for samples and small, very urgent packages.

Dedicated warehouses

In addition to our East Coast US warehouse we’ve added a West Coast warehouse, reducing sea miles from factory to warehouse and land miles from warehouse to customer. We have dedicated warehouses in the UK, EU, and Australia, enabling localised delivery.

We look after our team by offering benefits like flexible hours, a hybrid working model, and professional development opportunities.

Parents package

We offer a generous paid parents package to support the families in our team, including 16 weeks paid parental leave. To support the transition back to work we offer a return to work bonus, flexible hours and a gradual return to full capacity.

Pride

We are proud to celebrate with our annual campaign supporting LGBTIQ+ human rights globally. As of 2026, we have donated $165,467USD to our charity partner Outright International. We believe your home should reflect who you are, and we’re proud to put our rainbow to work in support of Pride.

Charity partnerships

Mustard supports a range of philanthropic organisations dedicated to helping people experiencing homelessness or the impact of domestic violence. We have proudly donated to Beam, Furnishing Futures, ReLove and many more over the years.

We’re striving for progress, not perfection. We believe in doing what we can now, over waiting to do it perfectly later. You can read more about our journey to a more sustainable future, or get in touch if you have any questions.
