It started with a long walk and two sisters living on the opposite side of the world. The idea was sparked by the question: What is it that you love that is uniquely you? Becca thought about her home and studio. She had a random selection of metal lockers. One flaky old one found on the side of the road, a few from antique stores and some new. She's always had a thing for lockers.

From that day in 2017 the work began to bring our colourful lockers to the world. We’ve grown so quickly and now have retail customers purchasing from our online stores worldwide. The count so far this year has been sales to 36 countries! We are also stocked by over 150 retailers in Australia, New Zealand, the UK, Europe and the US – including Urban Outfitters, Oliver Bonas and Libertys London. In August 2021 we launched to retail customers in the US, with our wholesale operation to follow very soon. It’s an exciting time as there is lots more growth on the horizon. 

Mustard in numbers:

  • 2 offices, one based in Newcastle, Australia and the other in London, UK.
  • 30+ wonderful people make up Team Mustard in our Wholesale, Trade, Logistics, Merchandising, Customer Service, Creative, Marketing and Finance teams.
  • 4 warehouses across the globe that service our core regions of Australia + New Zealand, United Kingdom, Europe and US + Canada. 
  • £160, 000+ donated to our charity partner, Beam. Beam bridges the gap between homelessness and a sustainable income for people who need some support.

The Role

Mustard is looking for a Head of People and HR to join our growing team.

Bringing your wealth of experience, you will be responsible for implementing and developing our global People and HR strategy. Reporting into our co-founders, this role comes with a real opportunity to shape and form the next steps for Mustard's growth. You will be working to build on our culture, roll out a learning and development programme with a big focus on our people performance as well as employee relations. You will greet every challenge with kindness and enthusiasm, using your natural ability to juggle multiple tasks and experience to lead with compassion and integrity.

This role is being advertised as full-time (3 days in our London office and 2 days from home) but has the potential to be part-time for the right candidate.

What you'll be doing

People + culture

  • You will work with the Leadership team to design, implement and champion solutions to support company culture and enhance employee engagement

  • You will be an expert in our company values, always seeking ways to promote a fair, ethical and collaborative workplace

  • You will develop and oversee how Mustard internally communicates within the team
  • You will work on improving our employee benefits and initiatives looking to increase employee engagement, well-being and retention
  • You will proactively seek feedback by carrying out frequent employee surveys and report to the leadership team with actionable next steps
  • You will aspire to be a force for good for our people, planet and prosperity to obtain business accolades and certifications such as B-Corp
  • You will look after the relationship with our charity partner Beam and seek opportunities to implement CSR into our company culture

HR + Employee Relations

  • You will be the go-to contact for day-to-day employee relations, helping to resolve any issues with empathy and kindness at your core

  • You will always seek to give guidance and educate team members when challenging situations occur, for instance, team grievances, conflicts, disciplinary and absences

  • You will advise the founders and senior team on any HR and Employee Relations matters, as well as being a trusted member of the senior management team

  • You will ensure all HR processes and documentation are accessible, accurate and helpful to the team with the help of our HR platform (Bright HR)

  • You will ensure the People and HR department is equipped with the tools and resources they need to fulfil their role and responsibilities as our company scales and grow

  • You will take on responsibility for admin, projects and tasks for the HR and People department

Learning + Development

  • Using your prior experience, you will create a budget for learning and development programmes across the global business, ensuring our team have what they need to excel in their roles

  • You will identify and implement training initiatives for the team based on our business priorities and individual development needs

  • You will spot opportunities for personal coaching and mentoring in areas such as management training, confidence-building, goal-setting and building a success-driven mindset within the team

  • You will work with our existing team development programme to make improvements and guide the development planning process for the team

Recruiting + Retention

  • You will work with our leadership team on the company org chart, understanding the business requirements and making suggestions on future growth plans

  • You will understand each role within the business and regularly benchmark roles internally and externally

  • You will manage the end-to-end people experience lifecycle, making sure our team stay engaged throughout their time with us

  • You will manage the end-to-end recruitment lifecycle, with a focus on diversity and inclusion

  • Working with the People Co-ordinator you will identify resourcing needs, draft job ads, screen and shortlist candidates in addition to hosting interviews and making offers

  • You will facilitate the onboarding and off-boarding of all new employees whilst always looking to receive feedback and make improvements

Policies + Compliance

  • You will be the policy and compliant expert for the business, having your finger on the pulse with law and legislation in both the UK and Australia with the support of Bright HR

  • You will review and develop our company policies and procedures globally. We are looking for innovation here and making sure we do things the Mustard way!

  • You will own our Workplace Health & Safety function globally, utilising Bright HR to make sure we’re staying safe at work whether it’s in the office or working remotely

Hello, is it you we’re looking for?

  • You have a minimum of a CIPD qualification or 5 years of People and HR experience, particularly in a start-up environment

  • You are hungry to make your mark in a growing global business and find joy in seeking opportunities to innovate ideas for the People and HR function

  • You are often described as a ‘people person’, naturally wanting to help and support the people around you

  • You have top-notch attention to detail, especially when you’re spinning multiple plates

  • You will have a network of contacts and established relationships with other HR professionals to ensure we are staying ahead of the curve

  • You have experience dealing with complex employee relations issues and thrive from resolving these in the best way possible

  • You have experience in organisational design, change management and company strategy to support a 30+ growing team

  • You have experience in up-skilling managers to be effective and impactful

  • As well as being a strategic, top-level thinker you won’t mind being a do’er too!

  • We are a global business that runs on different time zones, and as our team is split between the UK and Australia, there are sometimes meetings outside of office hours. Flexibility is how we roll!
