Sisters in Business - brands we love run by awesome sisters
We like to think that being sisters is our special business super power! Working with someone you know inside and out really makes things a whole lot easier. It brings a level of trust that is hard to find in any other relationship, you know each others strengths (and weaknesses) and have a deep understanding of what we each need/want/wish for.
We wrote a whole blog post about how our relationship has helped (and sometimes hindered... but mostly helped!) us along the way.
As it turns out, we aren't the only ones to have discovered this business 'hack'! There are a number of other wonderful sister gangs smashing it in the business world and creating products we adore. So here's an inspiring line-up of sister owned business. Maybe they're brands you already love and you didn't know they were founded by an amazing pair of sisters, or maybe you will find some new faves from this list! Either way, we are here to spread the small business love far and wide.
kip and co
First up are the lovely sisters of Kip and Co, Kate and Hayley, along with their best friend Alex! These three are the queens of prints and textures, whether that's bedlinen, cushions, or clothes for kids and adults alike! If we may say so ourselves, their bedding matches our lockers really well - especially Lilac!
spell
Elizabeth and Isabella are the faces behind Spell, bringing that free-spirited Bryon Bay vibe to the world. Their styles are modern yet bohemian, and the pair describe their business journey as a 'fairytale'. Yep, we get that - sometimes being able to work with your sister everyday can feel like a dream!
soru
Next up is Soru Jewellery, this time a favourite of Tash, our UK Wholesale Happiness Hero! Soru actually means 'sisters' in Sicilian, which couldn't be any more appropriate for this list! The sisters behind Soru are Francesca and Marianna, and we love that they create sustainable yet still stunning pieces.
olliella
Another pair of sisters who know what it's like to live on the other side of the world to each other! They started out with a gallery in London, then created custom made nursing chairs, made 'belly bags' a thing and then created their iconic rattan Luggy. We both have so many of their goodies in our homes and love them even more knowing they're from a sister brand!
twoobs
TWOOBS' foundations as a business really speaks to us, they are big on ethical practices, comfort and sustainability, along with creating shoes that just look great! It is the brainchild of Jess and Stef, sisters who just wanted shoes that were both pretty and practical. Sound familiar? It's not just lockers that this motto applies to!
mulberry threads
If you're all about the comfort, then these next sisters have the business for you. Claire and Kate, along with their childhood best friend Kira, are the creators of Mulberry Threads, the ultimate specialists in all things bamboo, whether that's bedding, sleepwear, swaddles or shirts! They have created a comfortable night's sleep that is also sustainable and silky smooth - a total win-win!
Collective Closets
Where the colours and patterns of Nairobi meet Melbourne street style. Laurinda and Fatima are all about prints and vibrant colour and you know we're fans of bringing a rainbow to your wardrobe! All their pieces are created in Melbourne and you can even visit their shop if you're in that part of the world!
sprout and sparrow
One of our favourite sister businesses to look to for adorable gifts for little ones is the creation of Tash and Adi. Sprout and Sparrow was founded in 2014 creating cute, colourful prints, cards, stationery and gifts for little ones... and maybe sometimes for grown-ups too! Just two sisters doing great things. We love to see it!
squirrel sisters
The tastiest business on this list, the squirrel sisters! Inventors of tasty treats that are sugar free, and therefore guilt free in our books, pass one over please! The 'squirrel sisters' in the name are Grace and Sophie, who have been creating delicious nibbles since 2015. What we love about these two is that their business started because Grace started whipping up sugar-free treats for Sophie after she received a diagnosis that meant she needed to give up sugar. Doing something to help out her sister turned into the business they have today... such an amazing story!
a south london makers market
The great thing about this business is that it also incorporates a whole load of other amazing small business, too! A South London Maker's Market was founded by twins (yup, the ultimate sisters) Liv & Dais. They hold in-person markets for small makers, just like Becca used to do pre-Mustard! We love how many new brands we have discovered through them and are inspired by the awesome big things they are doing themselves!
grape and fig
Ok, just one more to tickle your tastebuds. You have never seen table displays quite like that of Grape and Fig! It was founded by Toria in 2017 and she was later joined by her sister Catherine in 2019. They now run the business together, creating grazing tables that are quite literally, good enough to eat!
the happy blossoms
The Happy Blossoms is a real family affair... sisters Chloe and Lauren plus their Mum and Dad have teamed up to bring their iconic dried flower bouquets to the world. Their whole feed is a rainbow of joyful colour and we love seeing these explosions of happiness pop up on our feed (or arrive on our doorstep!)
To round things off, while we're talking talking sisters, here's some more siblings doing cool things that you may be into!
- The Beach People was created by sisters Emma and Victoria.
- Emma and Elsie over at A Beautiful Mess are our long term sister-girl-crushes!
- @deesbasement + @abimarvel, we love following Dee and Abi on insta. Cakes + Fashion = a very cool pair of sisters.
- Megan and Faye have ridiculously amazing wardrobes and thankfully you can get your hands on their look at @saturday_bymeganellaby or follow them at @meganellaby and @fellaby
- @aimeelouwood who you might recognise from Sex Education (best.show.ever) and her equally talented sis @emilywoodmakeup.
- @hunterstylestudio - not just sisters but their mum too! This trio have a gorgeous online store that just so happens to sell our lockers!
- We were blown away listening to the story of Robin and Andrea, the sisters behind McBride Sisters. Seriously, listen to this!
- Whatever Lucie from @babyanything and Elle @elle_ferguson touch pretty much turns to gold!
Behind every small business there is a person, or people, and sometimes even sisters, working hard to create beautiful things. We feel so lucky to have been able to go on this journey together and discover so many other amazing business sisters along the way.
